SDN Hackfest


The SDN hackfest is a software project development contest including developers (4 per team) and ably supported by UI/UX designers and Documentation folks. Each team will be given a theme and problem to work on that must be completed in 1 day. All code developed will be under Apache2 License and will be available on GitHub with a chance to contribute to main stream open source projects.

This hackfest is not about presenting ideas. It is about working hands-on as a team with Developers, Designers, Documenters to develop a complete deployable solution to the given problem. During registration, individuals or teams will select a prioritized list of predefined problems to work on. Organizers will assign projects once all entries are in.

Indian consulting companies monitor and manage most of the networks deployed in Fortune 1000 organizations around the world, either onsite or remotely. Additionally these companies provide software development services for many, many IT organizations.
SDN related offerings enable outsourcing companies provide more advanced services in addition to basic networking tasks while enabling the real end customer get more out of their networks. SDN has been the backbone for infrastructure areas such as Smart Cities program such as Bristol, UK.

Participate in the SDN Hackfest @ Bangalore

Participating in the SDN Hackfest is simple. Please note: ONLY OPEN SOURCE software and applications can be used for the projects and presentations (including UX and DOCX).
Libraries used must be Apache2, BSD or GPL license. There will be no training at this event. Participants are expected to do their home work and be well versed in programming. This event is about contributing to open source and getting recognized for your work.

Step 1: About You
Are you a Open Source developer? A Open Source UX/UI specialist? A Open Source wordsmith or documentation specialist? If you are either of these, you are eligible to participate in this competition. We would encourage you participate as a team. However, individuals are also welcome and will be allotted a team as soon as your participation is accepted.
Step 2: Selection & Registration
Every individual/team MUST select from the given list of projects. For individual registrants, organizers will include them as a part of the team. UX and Documentation folks will be part of "general" pool and will be assigned to projects.
To keep the competition on a level playing field, all participants will be required to submit to a preliminary assessment of capabilities and abilities.
Step 3: Selection in 2 steps
1. Individuals/Teams register and express prioritized interest on projects. They also provide their Github ID, LinkedIn profile and a maximum of 200 words information which will be used to qualify the candidate.
2. Qualified candidates get email to register for the event by paying a fee of Rs.1,000/- each
Step 4: Prepare, Pre-Plan
Once you are registered as a Qualified Contestant, you will be informed of additional team members (if any). Feel free to connect with them online and offline. Additionally, all necessary documents, training videos, references and pre-reading online resource links will be provided.
Step 5: The Competition
July 2, 2016: At the ASM Technologies Hackfest Centre, the competition begins. The Hackfest expects the teams to present completed (tested code, documented and deployable) projects. Projects will be presented via demos and slide material to team of panelists for evaluation.
Step 6: The Reward
Apart from getting recognized in the world of OpenSource and getting evaluated by a team of international panelists, there is a cash prize for the winning teams

SDN HACKFEST FAQs

Participation is invited from SDN developers using Open Source technology for Networking Solutions. However, actual acceptance of your participation is subject to the answer that you send to the 'pre-qualifier' question in the registration. Selected /Qualifying participants will be informed to complete the Registration process.
The Apps/Solutions the team creates, will use 'Open Source' products ONLY. The Apps/Solutions/Products will be answers to the Project Problems alloted to the team. In case you have a solution to another problem/business issue, please discuss it with Mr Shivaram Mysore by mail and get an acceptance note for inclusion in the SDN Hackfest.
Each team will have 4 developers, and 1 set of UI/UX developer + Technical Document Specialist. The entire team could be set up by yourself (Team Participation). Alternatively, individuals participants would be teamed with others to form the necessary combination. The team project problems will be assigned as soon as you register, so the team bonding can begin in earnest.
Each team will be given Zodiac FX for the project. The Technology needs are:
For Developers
Infrastructure : Python
DB & Dash boards : Influx DB, NoSQL (CouchDB) Grafana.
Web UI : Javascript, HTML5, CSS.
For UI/UX Designers
Inkscape, Gimp or other suitable Open Source products/Apps.
For Document/Tech writers
Any Open Source/Google Docs, Github Markdown, ReStructured Text.
Any other options and technology details that are 'project' specific will be intimated in the 'getting-ready' doc for the project.
Although all interested developers can apply to register for the SDN Hackaton, the Registration fee of Rs. 1000/- (Rs One thousand only) for the SDN Hackfest, is payable (online) only by the candidates who have been selected for participation. Every selected candidate will recieve a mail, confirming the acceptance of candidature as a contestant and request to pay the registration fee.
This is a team event. There are cash prizes for the team along with a Merit Certificate for each member.

First Prize : Rs 50,000/- (Rs Fifty Thousand only.)
Second Prize : Rs 25,000/- (Rs Twenty Five Thousand only.)
Third Prize : Rs 10,000/- (Rs Ten Thousand only.)

The Zodiac FX alloted to every team is a Free gift/takeaway (after the event), for participation in the SDN Hackfest.
Certificates
Every Individual participant will receive a Certificate of participation at the end of the event.
The SDN Hackfest team event will be held on July 2,3 2016 from 9.00 am to 6 pm. The Hackfest will be held at ASM Technologies Limited, 14/2, Wellington Street, Richmond Town Bangalore, KA 560 025.
In this Team Competition, the Idea/Solution needs to be fully implemented, and the submission should be clearly functional so that it can be reviewed by the judges.
In this Team Competition, and the developers of the Application will have all rights and own the IP of the product. However, all code needs to be in public domain (open source).
The team performace will be judged on the following criteria:
Technical
Evaluation based on code quality, testability, UX, Documentation
Customer
Evaluation based on applicability of deployment, deployability, the problems it solves for them.
Judging & Jury
The decision of the Organisers (SDN) and the judges will remain final to all aspects of the SDN Hackfest.
